Fresh from a collaborative release with Confidential Recipe on RSPX, Harvey McKay arrives on Ben Sims’ Hardgroove with the solo ‘The Hook Up’ EP, which is out now. Kicking off with the low tom-driven swing of ‘Only 909’ - a track that McKay crafted solely from a TR909 with no samples or synth leads - it celebrates the no-nonsense side of Hardgroove.
The percussion and sampling of ‘What Is Her Name?’ and ‘Hook Up’ are fuelled by underlying funk, while the big-room heft of closing track, ‘Superman’, takes no prisoners.
With an apparent well-received remix of Daniel Avery’s ‘Drone Logic’ for Phantasy Sound and releases on RSPX and his own Faction Music in the past year, Harvey’a two decades in the game show no signs of a drop off.
