Through tracks like ‘Higher State’ and, more recently, ‘Never Leave U’ and ‘Homelands’, Deep State label boss Grum has been making a return to his musical roots lately. Following that natural progression, the DJ/producer has revisited one of the tracks that drew him into the electronic music space in the first instance. To round out a truly flaming June last month, the Scot has given BT’s ‘Godspeed’ a layered reimagining.
Spooling up the sub-bass and breakbeats, Grum begins to tease the floor with BT’s haunting, female harmonies. Through echoing melodies and coastal atmospherics, he gives his rework an aerodynamic structure — tight, pulsing, and technologically intricate, yet one that’s every bit as much emotional and yearning.
The restless rhythms of his breaks play off against digital textures, as its tones aim to deliver an anthemic hail to summers past… and future.
