Having passed in 2014 at the age of 59, his official charitable organisation has commemorated Frankie Knuckles’ legacy - The Frankie Knuckles Foundation - continues to celebrate his work. Originally from New York and later going to Chicago, he was awarded the moniker ‘The Godfather of House’, which acknowledged his contribution to the genre’s birth. However, he was humbled to receive the moniker, always wanting to put the music first and not the limelight on himself as a DJ or producer.

Frankie was also part of the Def Mix family and shared the clubbing line-ups with fellow DJs David Morales and Satoshi Tomie. He was also a Grammy winner and boasted American President Obama as a fan and supporter. He went on to release many records, including ‘Baby Wants To Ride’ and ‘Your Love’ both featuring vocalist Jamie Principle, ‘The Whistle Song’ and ‘Tears’ featuring Robert Owens.
Remix-wise, he worked with Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, to name a few.
Today, 18 January, it's his 70th birthday, and to celebrate this milestone and continue recognising his contribution to house music, a host of DJs and musical peers will join an event to mark his legacy.
Two official Frankie Knuckles Foundation-approved events are scheduled at Metro in Chicago on 19 January and at Fabric in the UK on 25 January.
All proceeds from these events will be donated to the Frankie Knuckles Foundation.
Frederick Dunson, CEO Frankie Knuckles Foundation: “I along with the members of FKF, are thrilled and excited to celebrate this incredible occasion—honouring our beloved Frankie on his 70th heavenly birthday. This celebration stands as a true testament to his enduring legacy and the profound impact he has had on the world. We are continually amazed by the overwhelming outpouring of love and admiration he still receives.”
