The Berlin-based duo Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, aka Booka Shade, return to Bedrock with the ‘Understanding EP’, their second EP for John Digweed’s imprint. Opening with the dark, percussive pulse of ‘Understanding’, the duo lay down a work that invokes the spirit of classic house music with its distinctive vocal samples, bedded on a techno groove.
The jittery energy of ‘Sonus’ sees Walter and Arno drive the atmosphere towards more experimental sonic territory whilst never deviating from their groove foundations.
With their individualistic creative juices flowing freely, Booka Shade introduce hypnotising looped hooks, a low-slung tech groove and uplifting melodies for ‘Curve’. With its subtle added dose of funk, this is the combination to release some heart-warming summer sunshine into the party.
As a finale, ‘Retox’ unfolds as a spiralling, electronic creation that offers a climactic conclusion to the EP.
