Last night DJ Magazine announced the winners of its Best Of British Awards 2015 covering the UK’s DJs, producers, nightlife and festivals at a bash at Heaven, London. This year’s winners include Fabio & Grooverider, Fabric, Defected, Carl Cox, Annie Mac, Skepta, Chemical Brothers, Nocturnal Sunshine, Revenge, Bicep, Greg Wilson, Slam, Jasper James, Eats Everything and more
As a counterpoint to the Top 100 DJs poll, DJ Mag started the Best Of British awards a few years back in order to shine a spotlight on the talent on the UK’s own doorstep.
In electronic music, the UK played a significant part in kick-starting house and techno in the late-80s, while turn-of-the-90s breakbeat hardcore was unique to its shores. Out of hardcore came jungle/D&B, a British phenomenon that was apparently born on the multi-cultural streets of east London.
At the Best Of British awards Fabio & Grooverider were presented with the Outstanding Contribution award for their part in birthing D&B, and also gave Greg Wilson the Industry Icon gong for his services to disco-inspired dancefloors. Other winners included Eats Everything, Bicep, Nocturnal Sunshine aka Maya Jane Coles, and The Revenge.
Glasgow, Scotland was a double winner on the night with Sub Club winning the Best Small Club and Glasgow-based DJ/producers Slam winning Best Compilation with their ‘Slam Present Transmissions: Glasgow’.
