Djeff | Super Ascenscion

‘Soldier Ascension’ has been made in Angola, where Djeff is a DJ, producer and TV presenter, but this is not an Angolan album, it’s not defined or confined by national borders, and too 21st century in style and execution to be tarred with the ‘World Music’ brush. ‘Soldier Ascension’ is an album of cosmopolitan tracks that could loosely be described as Afro-house while incorporating elements of so many different musical styles that Djeff has heard and been inspired by growing up in Portugal and Angola, and on his travels as a DJ.

Hot Natured

Hot Natured

Enjoying house music’s current resurgence following the acclaim that gathered for their debut album ‘Different Sides Of The Sun’, Hot Natured recently revealed a new video for one of the collection’s highlights, the  summery grooves of ‘Benediction’. Starting with a teenager picking a lock in order to take control of a pick-up truck, the video depicts a day of wayward, hedonistic behaviour in which the destination – the pool-party – is all that matters.

Directed by Samy Mosher, the video’s hazy style is heightened by some striking cinematography of California’s stunning natural scenery.

The original version of ‘Benediction’ will feature on a new EP which will be available exclusively through Beatport. The EP will be completed with fresh new mixes courtesy of Lxury, GRADES, Nic Fanciulli and No Artificial Colours.

Formed in 2010, each member of Hot Natured has a decent reputation in their own right: DJ named Foss as “one of the most talented new forces in modern dance music today”; Jones is renowned for his Crosstown Rebels albums ‘Don’t You Remember The Future’ and ‘Tracks From The Crypt”; and Luca C and Ali Love were previously best known for their work together as Infinity Ink – most notably their anthems ‘Infinity’ and ‘Games’. The Dutch Talent EP

 The Dutch Talent EP

Next up on Hardsoul Pressings is the latest installment of ‘The Dutch Talent EP’, a series of releases that allows Roog and Greg to place the focus on some of their favourite up and coming Dutch producers. This EP kicks of with ‘Forget It’ from The Voyagers. Greg picked up on this early and snapped it up for the label through meeting Luuk at the Herman Brood Academy in Utrecht and the Voyagers could well be set to make some serious waves this year.

Following on from ‘Forget it’, Greg teams up with Sheila Hill and Amy Fasola on ‘Saved’ to deliver a swinging house groove that compliments Amy’s quirky vocal performance. Debut releases on the label from Georgio Star (‘Soulsessions’) and Vincent Voort (‘Body Smoke’) round off the EP to complete a package that should work across the summer dancefloors.

'The Dutch Talent EP #5' will be available exclusively on Traxsource from Monday 30 June with a full release following on Monday 14 July. Check it out below.

Wallflower

An eclectic demonstration of vocals and song-writing, Wallflower is a collaborative project between Alison Marks and Leah Floyeurs. Having made their name as separate performers, Wallflower sees these two English artists come together to deliver ‘Say You Won’t Ever’ on Defected Records, featuring remixes from Deetron and Asadinho.

Wallflower
Wallflower

With a crisp grand piano and sultry vocals reminiscent of Lana del Rey, the original track is full of unexpected melodic changes and lyrics, which entail a dark, misguided love. The Deetron Remix is based around an elevating synth arpeggio, which creates an ethereal backdrop for the vocals, while Deetron’s T-Line Version delivers a confident four-to-the-floor house rendition full of swinging, chopped vocal snippets and should be ideal for any dance floor. Asadinho’s Main Vocal Mix begins with a layered sound effect and lo-fi vocal intro leading into an array of spacy synth leads and a powerfully thudding bassline. The track evolves with the addition of eerie piano riffs that add to the original lyrical message of a love long lost. It’s out today on Defected Records, check it out below.

Dario G

Dario G

As football fever grips the world ahead of the start of the 2014 FIFA World Cup today, a great way to get in the mood is by revisiting a classic football anthem. Originally released in 1998, Dario G’s ‘Carnaval de Paris’ has been embraced by football fans the world over and 2014’s Rio Remixes put a whole new spin on the track.

First to remix ‘Carnaval de Paris’ is Jaxxon, the up-and-coming UK EDM producer who has seen his work championed by everyone from Tiesto to Eddie Halliwell. Jaxxon puts his trademark hard-hitting big room house spin on the track, transforming it into a fist-pumping electro workout.

Next up is Dzham & Alta, who bring the track bang up to date with a modern progressive trance feel mashed up with a slamming dubstep breakdown. Meanwhile Owen Westlake turns up the heat with a sexy Latin house feel, teaming flamenco-style guitars and accordions with a bouncing house beat to form a nice groove. Finally, Jonas Westling retains the anthemic trumpets and frantic percussion of the original track for a remix that is as Rio-ready as they come.

Dario G: “‘Carnaval de Paris’ just won't go away - it hasn't aged at all! It's been 16 years since its original release and it's still sounding as fresh and lively as ever. The new Rio Remixes are great and each one adds an extra twist to a now classic record that I'm very proud of."

It’s out now, check it out below.

Grum

Grum | The Touch

‘The Touch’ is the fifth single from Grum's forthcoming album. His previous singles ‘Everytime’, ‘The Theme’, ‘In Love’ and ‘Tears’ have been played across the board at BBC Radio 1 - from Zane to Annie Mac, Pete Tong to B Traits, Monki to Danny Howard (who recently had Grum do an exclusive mix for his Dance Anthems show). If you add in his remixes for the likes of Shift K3y, Sigma, Chromeo & Martin Garrix he's arguably one of the most consistently played producer/remixers right now.

It's no surprise then that Radio 1 recently asked Grum to create his first Essential Mix. His recent singles have had the kind of DJ support that reads like a who's who in club land: Solomun, Hot Since 82, Scuba, Sasha, Disclosure, Above & Beyond, DJ T, Bookashade, Axwell, Drums of Death, Slam, Russ Chimes, Tube & Berger, Huxley, Coyu, Joyce Muniz, Leftwing & Kody, Groove Armada, John Digweed, Mano Le Tough, Doctor Dru, Tensnake, Axwell, Digitalism, EDX, Mark Knight, Funk D'Void and more.

‘The Touch’ is arguably Grum's deepest, housiest release to date. Remixes come from Sébastien Léger (tough, jacking house), Solaris Heights (Sasha style deepness) and Andre Sobota (killer modern progressive).

It’s out 30 June on his own Heartbeats label.

Phil Weeks Feat Ladybird

Phil Weeks Feat Ladybird

'Searching4Love' is the fruit of a musical union between two Parisian house heads, DJ/producer Phil Weeks and vocalist Ladybird, who together have cooked up a slice of deep and soulful house for Robsoul. The song came about after Phil set about toying with samples from RAMP's version of the classic Roy Ayers 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'.

Phil crafted a subtle key hook over a hot cymbal drenched deep groove, before Ladybird added her seductive vocals, creating a deep house track for summer 2014. Deemed to get the soul-kids shuffling is a bonus promo – the sweet dusty vinyl flavoured 'You Want My Love', laced with a girly vocal sample, drizzled over a platter of infectious flute, piano and funky guitar hooks. Backed with some cool retro breaks 'You Want My Love' should be hitting poolside and beach party playlists this season.

Whether DJing or producing, Parisian Phil Weeks delivers raw beats influenced in equal measure by classic Chicago house and nu-school French flair, underpinned with a hip-hop attitude. In the studio Phil is dedicated to classic hardware like Akai’s MPC 3000 sampler and Roland’s TR909 drum machine. He has released more than 250 tracks and remixes since his debut in 2000, working with labels including 2020 Vision, Music For Freaks, Brique Rouge, Detour, Adult Only and his own Robsoul, which is responsible for the majority of his original output.

His recent release, 'Live At Paladium', has been supported by the dance music fraternity and has already been licensed to numerous popular compilation series including ‘Nick Fanciulli In The House’, ‘Defected In The House Ibiza 2014’ mixed by Simon Dunmore for Defected, ‘Kontor Sunset Chill 2014’, ‘Toolroom Knights Mixed by Doorly’ and ‘Blue Marlin 2014’ for CR2.

Ladybird (aka Julie Monnin) is a French/Australian songwriter, singer and DJ based in Paris and the UK. Her soul, house and jazz background made her one of the icons of the ‘90s ‘French Touch’ and cemented her place in the French house hall of fame. Her Soldiers of Twilight group with DJ Rork released several tracks on Ralph Lawson’s 20:20 Vision label, and her hit 'My Precious Thing' with Llorca on Laurent Garnier’s F Com was an international hit, with extensive play from  Kerri Chandler, Danny Krivit, Masters at Work and Pete Tong.

'Searching4Love' is out 13 June, check the video out below.

Denzal Park Ft. Jon Hume

Denzal Park Ft.Jon Hume

Australian duo Denzal Park continue to show their production skills with their latest track, ‘One Way Home’. Jon Hume (of Evermore fame) lends his vocal talents to the pair's new single, which was premiered on 9 May on Pete Tong's Essential Mix as the week's Essential Selection.

Denzal Park
Denzal Park

Hume's hooks meet with Denzal Park's signature progressive house sound, giving the track a promising display of possibly good things to come from the duo from Down Under.

Combining their production skills through a mutual affinity for electronic music, Denzal Park aka Kam Denny and Paul Zala, have carved their initials deep into the dancefloors and DJ-booths of their homeland's biggest nightclubs, darkest dance-halls and festival fields, delivering their concoction of melodies and rhythms to thousands of clubbers.

They kicked off their partnership five years ago with the Beatport #1 'Finally 2008', and proceeded to remix for names such as Dirty South, Avicii, Martin Solveig, Edx, Cicada, Full Intention and Pnau. Their original tracks 'Amarok', 'Nammos', 'Militia', 'Filterfreak', 'Ascension' and 'I'm A Drum Machine' have gained them support from Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto, Pete Tong, Fedde Le Grand, David Guetta and Laidback Luke. The duo have also written and produced two platinum-selling singles and received Australia's highest musical accolade, picking up an APRA award for Dance Work Of The Year.

Dirty Vegas

Dirty Vegas | Setting Sun

After the success of their debut Release for d:vision, ‘Let The Night’, which is still riding high in the Italian Official Top 40 Singles Chart after one month and now signed to Capitol Music in France, Germany and UK, Grammy winning duo Dirty Vegas return with their new single for the label in the shape of ‘Setting Sun’.

‘Setting Sun’ is an optimistic song that roughly resembles the semblance of Empire Of The Sun and Pharrell-like alternative dance elements, it's unapologetic pop music that refuses to adhere to rigid boundaries.

Remixes include the hand of Nora En Pure - who delivers a deep house remix, Pete Tong’s Future Star Betoko, who piles on the funk with squiggly synths and a cool bouncing bassline, and up and coming UK DJ/producer Chad Tyson, who delivers a dancefloor–ready interpretation of the track, pitching down the vocal on top of a sunny nu disco groove. (Part 2) remixes come from Daddy’s Groove, Grum and Chromeo’s Last Gang very own Leisure Cruise.

Steve Smith and Paul Harris are well versed in the world of electronic music, creating Dirty Vegas over 10 years ago, and are ready for the next step in the band’s evolution. They continue a legacy of excellence in a career that has garnered many accolades including a Grammy for Best Electronic Album. Smith and Harris have spent 2013 working on new material and the result is their sixth official release; an EP titled ‘Let The Night’ released on d:vision this spring and already charting Top 3 on iTunes US Dance Albums. Illyus & Barrientos

Fledgling label Love & Other’s second release comes from a pair of accomplished Glaswegian DJ/producers who really are on a bit of a roll just now. Falling on from their massive 'Do Anything You Wanna’ release on Glasgow Underground, Illyus & Barrientos return with their new ‘Ballin’ EP.

An unlikely pair, Illyus, originally a hip-hop DJ known for his turntablism, and Barrientos, a classical music enthusiast; the duo’s paths seemed fated to cross. Individually, they have already achieved support from a cross-section of DJs, including Giles Peterson, Groove Armada, John Digweed and Sasha.

Support for their first collaboration EP on Glasgow Underground included Pete Tong, Skream, Gorgon City, Amine Edge, Kry Wolf and loads more. Dimitri From Paris

Dimitri From Paris In The House Of Disco

‘Dimitri From Paris In The House Of Disco’  is the latest release from the French DJ/producer, an auditory smorgasbord of house and disco from the likes of Diana Ross, Hercules & Love Affair, Sister Sledge, Lindstrøm, Chic, Todd Terje, DJ Pierre and many more. In the late-70s and early-80s, after its bubble of underground popularity and credibility had well and truly burst, disco began it’s slow but steady mutation into house.

Dimitri From Paris
Dimitri From Paris

Lindstrøm, Skream and Todd Terje are stand-out, modern-day champions of the ‘unabashed’ disco sound cited by Dimitri, and all make an appearance here, the latter’s electric ‘Delorean Dynamite’ a neon-fused, hands-in-the-air highlight at the midway point of Dimitri’s first mix. Representing true disco heritage, Tom Moulton reworks Brand New Heavies ‘Sunlight’, while Dimitri himself gets in on the action, dropping his own remixes of seminal Disco artists Sister Sledge (‘Lost In Music’), Diana Ross (‘The Boss’) and Chic (‘LeFreak’), the last two of which are exclusive to this release.

CD2 celebrates all that is exemplary in ‘Neo Vintage House’, again matching House masters past and present, occasionally in the same track; the Fingers Acid Jam Vocal Edit of FCL ‘It’s You’ being a standout example. Elsewhere you’ll find a group that absolutely embodies the original spirit of House and Disco, the inimitable Hercules & Love Affair who’s ‘Do You Feel The Same?’ closes out the mix.

Dimitri: “This new compilation is a testament to how disco and house are intertwined three decades after their inception,” he says. “Rather than focusing solely on classic original recordings, I wanted to show how those sounds were made contemporary without losing their spirit.

“I would like to dedicate this collection to the recently deceased Godfather Of House, Frankie Knuckles. A key person in the mutation of disco into house, he best described house music as ‘Disco's Revenge’. And a very sweet one it is.”

Dimitri From Paris In The House of Disco is out 15 June (2CD and digital) on Defected Records

Nick Warren

Nick Warren Presents The Soundgarden

Next month will see the release of a new, crowd-funded compilation on Hope Recordings, entitled ‘Nick Warren Presents The Soundgarden’. Nick Warren is well-known in electronic music, having released material via imprints such as Global Underground, Renaissance and Cream since the early-90s as well as being the A&R behind Hope Recordings and one half of the legendary Way Out West. Here we see Nick return to the mix CD format, which he tells us ‘has always been something I love’, via a 2CD compilation taking in downbeat and club sounds.

Nick Warren Presents The Soundgarden

Nick Warren: ‘’Sourcing new music and making it into a cohesive album isn’t always an easy process, but something I find very fulfilling. Ever since compiling the first ever ‘Back To Mine’ in the ‘90s my passion for weird and wonderful ambient textures and melody-filled dance floor sounds has been one of the driving forces of my search for the perfect track.

”I feel that my role as a producer and DJ also includes helping new and emerging talent and giving them a platform to be noticed in this ever-changing musical world. This is something I’ve been able to pursue again with this new album that will be my 13th!’’

CD1 sees Nick explore soundscapes and ethereal textures, featuring records from the likes of Clara Moto and Nils Frahm as well as some exciting newcomers that Nick’s unearthed while compiling the mix. CD2 tips the focus over to the club, comprising an amalgamation of intricate and melodic dance floor focused cuts, with established artists on offer such as Barry Jamieson, Black 8, Da Funk and Waywork, as well as introducing some fresh talent into the mix as well.

To coincide with the release of the compilation Warren will also curate a series of ‘Soundgarden’ events, the first of which kicked off in London, early this month.

‘Nick Warren Presents The Soundgarden’ is out on Hope Recordings 9th June.

Trance Essentials 2014

Trance Essentials 2014

The ideal essential compilation has to be a continuum -- covering the ground between old and new, bridging the gap between timeless and bleeding edge. ‘Trance Essentials 2014’ is a double dose of the tunes of the moment, including reworks of some classics from the past. Well-known artists have made their mark on the tracklist, and possible rising stars find themselves well represented too.

Straight from Paul Oakenfold’s upcoming ‘Trance Mission’ album, the classics ‘Toca Me’ and ‘Café Del Mar’ have gotten a major facelift and should turn heads everywhere they’re played. Andrew Rayel has two tracks on the compilation, including ‘Eiforya’ with Armin van Buuren. The two throwback tracks ‘Must Be The Love’ from Arty and BT featuring Nadia Ali and Jurgen Vries’ ‘The Theme’ set the level of quality for the album.

New club tracks from Dash Berlin & Rigby, Gaia, and a Johan Malmgren remix of Aruna’s ‘Start a Fire’ keep the future of trance music burning brightly. An extensive collection of fresh new remixes (including a remix of Paul van Dyk’s ‘Crush’ from Las Salinas), ‘Trance Essentials 2014’ is out on Armada on 6 June. Check one of its tracks, Tenishia’s ‘Benedictus’ below.

Burnt Island Casuals

Burnt Island Casuals

Continuing their decade long partnership, The Revenge and Sub Club’s Harri emerge from their Glasgow studio under their Burnt Island Casuals guise to release the ‘Linger Longer EP’. If you've visited Subculture at Sub Club in Glasgow; one of the finest internationally-renowned underground clubbing havens, then you’re likely already to have absorbed Harri’s studious approach to production. Here the EP’s crisp and drum programming works to prove an enthusiastic and endearing backdrop to some 4/4 flexible synth work.

Burnt Island Casuals
Burnt Island Casuals (The Revenge & Harri)

Fresh from completion of 6th Borough Project’s sophomore album, The Revenge’s association with quality productions continues; expect reassuringly slow-mo dancefloor memories, as guest Esa Williams provides additional percussion and unified analogue power on ‘Theme From Easy Aces’ and the heady, block-laiden ‘Belshill Rendevouz’.

Their production partnership goes on through ‘Grouse House’ and ‘Clown Prosecution Service’; reproducing the house sounds of an elder era with painstaking, granular attention to detail and sneaky modernising touches. The latest offering serves as a befitting prelude to The Revenge’s production work for forthcoming and inaugural release on Sub Club’s new label.

If any label can claim ownership of a sound, the pair have honed their obsession into four lengthy cuts nailing Roar Groove’s thematic mission statement. Have a listen below.

Craig Smith

Craig Smith

Next week will see the release of Craig Smith’s ‘Only When It Is Darkest’ EP via Teng Records, backed with reworks from Phlash and Fabio Della Torre. Craig has been involved in electronic music since the early-90s and over the years has earned critical acclaim for his collaborative guise with The Revenge; 6th Borough Project.

Smith’s material has been released via imprints such as Delusions Of Grandeur, Permanent Vacation and Use Of Weapons and here he joins the Teng roster, following the likes of Neville Watson, Nubian Mindz and Paul Mac.

Only When It Is Darkest EP

Opening the single is the original version of title track ‘Only When It Is Darkest’, an understated number built around dreamy melodies, gritty analogue bass, off-kilter rhythms and spoken word vocal lines. The latter stages then sees the melodic elements unfold as Smith works in jazzy piano licks, pizzicato strings and tension building pads. Phil Asher steps up to rework ‘Only When It Is Darkest’ next under his Phlash alias, and as expected from Asher the mix is soul-drenched house music, fuelled by resonant, evolving synth stabs, punchy bass hits and bumpy, swinging beats.

Fabio Della Torre, founder of Bosconi Records, delves deep with his interpretation of ‘Only When It Is Darkest’ next, stripping back the percussive aspects to a swirling filtered groove, while the warm, ethereal melodic sounds take the reins and steadily blossom over the compositions seven and a half minutes. Closing the release is another original from Smith, entitled ‘Matter Don’t Matter’, the cut takes on a more organic form this time with natural percussive sounds, soft Rhodes melodies and throbbing low-end tones.

It’s out 19 May, check it out below.

Oliver Heldens

Oliver Heldens X Becky Hill

Originally released by Musical Freedom, the instrumental edit of 19-year-old Oliver Heldens’ deep house track ‘Gecko’ has become a popular track in club sets for 2014, peaking at #2 in the Beatport chart and garnering support from the likes of Pete Tong, Danny Howard and Zane Lowe. The latest edit ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’, written and vocalled by Becky Hill during a late night recording session with MNEK, is being released by Parlophone’s new dance imprint FFRR.

Initially written for another vocalist, Becky’s vocal on Gecko’s chorus was deemed the perfect fit and has already been coined the ‘Hottest Record in the World’ by Zane Lowe.

Signed to Spinnin’ Records when he was just 17-years-old, the Netherlands-born DJ/producer has also released the tracks ‘Stinger’ and ‘Juggernaut’ as well as creating remixes for Martin Garrix. Oliver’s recent schedule included sets at Miami Winter Music Conference where he played sets at the Spinnin’ Sessions, the All Gone Pete Tong Pool Party and Tiesto’s Musical Freedom Party. His biggest UK set to date will come at this year’s Creamfields, where he’ll play the Departures arena. He recently supported Avicii at two huge arena dates in Belgium and the Netherlands.

After writing and singing the toplines  for Rudimental’s ‘Powerless’ and Wilkinson’s D&B track ‘Afterglow’ last year, Becky Hill has been in demand.  She has also been writing and recording with a host of producers and musicians, gathering material for her upcoming album, released later this year on Parlophone Records.

'Gecko (Overdrive)' is out 23 June, check it out below.

DJ Roland Clark Presents Urban Soul

DJ Roland Clark Presents Urban Soul

When turning back the pages of King Street’s history, DJ Roland Clark presents Urban Soul’s ‘President House’ would possibly have a chapter all to its own. In keeping with the rich tradition of mixing and mashing both old and new, King Street presents two new “re takes” on the classic that both showcase what’s fresh in today’s dance music world but also keeping true to the elements of what made a classic, a classic.

DJ Roland Clark Presents Urban Soul

Hailing from the greater Frankfurt area, Sascha Dive has made quite an impression on the international house and techno circuit over the past few years. With releases on some of the industry’s most respected labels and performances at arguably some of the world’s best venues, Sascha is starting to make things happen. Michel de Hey & Mulder

Michel de Hey & Mulder

As someone who has possibly opened the door to techno and tech house for a generation of clubbers with his Miracle, Brave New World and Hey! labels, Dutch producer Michel de Hey has now joined forces with fellow countryman and rising DJ Mulder to release their ‘Seven EP’ on Defected’s DFTD imprint.

Title track ‘Seven’ is an eight minute journey that weaves its way through an array of shuffling transitions and cosmic overtures. ‘Trieb' boasts a huge, rocky bassline complimented by whisking vocal waves, while ‘Balicoon’ is the icing on this EP, demonstrating the duo’s versatility in threading evolving, saw tooth basslines, off-beat cowbell riffs and soaring ‘80s synth pads.

Andi Rivera Ft Robert Owens

Andi Rivera Ft Robert Owens

Deep 8 Recordings is a brand new UK label intent on offering high quality house releases and its inaugural release comes from Andi Rivera and features the Robert Owens on vocal duty. A selection of remixes comes from Pezzner, A Lister, James Johnston and taMe.

Andi Rivera Ft Robert Owens

In original form the single is classic house with a bassline straight out of ‘90s New York, with an emotive vocal, the percussion squelches along, taking you with it every step of the way.

Seattle based deep houser Pezzner tackles the first remix and flips the track into something much more suited for late night back rooms. Owens’ vocal becomes a distant murmur and sensuous, liquid synths instead take centre stage. Next up is A Lister, a 24-year-old house producer and DJ from Bradford. His version is full on vibey, bouncy and bold with neon chord stabs, funky percussion and only the slightest vocal coos from Owens.

James Johnston, previously of labels like Black Key and No Matter What, then reworks the track into something that skips and skims with a jazzy old school energy similar to that of Kerri Chandler. Finally, the taMe remix is a fusion of garage skip, house warmth and bass heaviness. It’s out today.

Shinichi Osawa

Shinichi Osawa

New Japanese talent, Shinichi Osawa, is apparently causing a stir over in Tokyo's clubland just now and has recently announced his debut double A side single, 'Breaking Through the Night / All I Need', via Kitsuné this spring.

Fresh from his recent collaboration with Parisian stars, BeatauCue on their 'Falcon Punch' EP and a bunch of remixes for Etienne de Crecy, Digitalism and Boys Noize, the time has arrived for Shinchi Osawa to launch his release on the Franco-Japanese label.

'Breaking Through the Night' is cheeky disco-tech oddity, full of aural pleasing surprises. The second track, 'All I Need', is a creeping electro-house monster that may well devour dancefloors this season. The EP also features three remixes: Xander Milne offers a very punchy one for starters, then comes French producer Korgbrain's remix which brings a deep and minimal touch to the track, finally another French rising producer, Eggo, signs off with a smooth but groovy version. check it out below, it’s out 7 April.

Paolo Rocco

Paolo Rocco

Fresh from mixing a disc of ‘Defected In The House Miami 2014’, Canadian artist Paolo Rocco has been going from strength to strength with his steady flow of releases in recent years. Highly regarded for his structured DJ sets as well as his productions, this artist of Italian descent has produced for a slew of creditable imprints such as Saved Records, Seaking, Real Tone and Klasse Recordings whilst also seeing his work praised by the likes of Damian Lazarus, Nic Fanciulli and DJ Sneak.

Rocco’s original of ‘Move Body, Move Forward’ has mesmeric clear chords making for the body of the track whilst catchy pitched down vocals add a dose of quirkiness to its emotive veneer. In contrast fellow Canadian, Nathan Barato, offers a dark roller of a remix with energy that should stir up dancefloors at the push of a button. Lastly Osunlade demonstrates his signature gift for reconstructing a track into something alternatively fresh and exciting in the form of two mixes: Yoruba Soul Mix and Yoruba Soul Dub. Both versions incorporate a unique blend of layered synths whilst the vocals recur as a hypnotising loop. It’s out 7 April on Defected Records.

Matt Tolfrey

Matt Tolfrey

The next release on Leftroom revisits the debut album, ‘Word Of Mouth’, by label boss Matt Tolfrey, which was released in 2012. Four cuts from the full length get remixed by Mr Fingers, NYC’s Kenny Dope, Justin Harris and Luke Solomon’s Freaks project and Classic cohort Rob Mello’s No Ears. First up, Matt Tolfrey feat Jem Cooke & Kevin Knapp’s ‘Distant Story’ gets remixed by Larry Heard. The Alleviated boss transforms the track into a deeply soulful and spiritual track with otherworldly pads, feathery light hi hats and knock-on-wood beats.

Matt Tolfrey | Word Of Mouth Remixes

Next up, one half of Masters At Work, Kenny Dope, does his thang to ‘Turn You Out’. This one is a skipping, lively jam with crisp percussion and soft edged chord vamps. That unmistakable MAW bounce is buried deep within and the tune  builds to a subtle peak over time. Rob Mello’s No Ears Vox of Matt Tolfrey feat James Teej ‘Never Assume’ is a low down growler with a suitably warm and organic dub quotient as well as light footed percussive skip and snaking, bulbous bassline. It’s full of charm and dancing potential before Freaks get a little more late night and after party styled with their remix. It’s off kilter; full of murmuring voices and sharp hi hat slashes and marks a welcome return to the fray for the Freaks duo.

The remix package is out 21 April on Leftroom.

Rank 1 & Dennis Sheperd

Last year Rank 1 released their 13-minute track ‘13.11.11’ and their ‘Elements Of Nature’ bagged many credits, getting a MIXMAG Tune of the Month and landing the Dutch duo with a #5 position on Trancefix’s Tracks of the 2013 rundown.

For Germany’s Dennis Sheperd, the remixes of his biggest tune to date ‘Fallen Angel’ dropped on High Contrast Recordings in 2013 garnering huge support, which followed the success of his debut mix-comp and artist album ‘A Tribute To Life’.

Now, closing up fast on their landmark 250th release, High Contrast has united them for one this track. ‘Freude’ equals ‘joy’, ‘rausch’ means ‘noisy intoxication’ and in the collective pursuit of club floor feelgood-ery, Piet, Benno & Dennis have created a new electronic music cocktail. Steve Lawler

Steve Lawler | VIVa Music

DJ and producer Steve Lawler releases his new single ‘Do Ya’ today, on his own VIVa MUSiC.  Lawler’s latest entry into his label’s ever-expanding catalogue stitches together the groovy feel that he regularly instills into dance floors worldwide. The track continues to establish his distinctive house music sound, anchored around simple yet effective drum programming with the tracks own momentum emerging as the original’s charm.

Steve Lawler
Steve Lawler

Steve Lawler: "Over the last year I have been experimenting with the sounds of old school acid house mixed with the new possibilities of technology. I have been editing and re-working lots of my old records from my extensive collection. Whist going through all this history of house it hugely inspired me to do what house music has always been about; to sample and be creative. ‘Do Ya’ was born from the depths of my record collection.”

The limited edition gold vinyl release, due out on 24 March features the original and instrumental version on the A-side, the B-side sporting two very different interpretations from Hot Since 82 and Patrick Topping. Hot Since 82 supplies a darker vibe that is unmistakably his own. Patrick Topping debuts on VIVa MUSiC, having seen considerable success with his Hot Creations output and brings a chunkier trippy taste to the forefront. The digital release also includes a dreamy yet rolling remix from Bunte Bummler.

“The remixes all came about organically and are from my favourite producers right now,” Steve explains. “First off, Hot Since 82 heard me play my original when we played together for Radio 1 and asked if he could remix it which I was really happy about, and of course he has delivered a bomb! He has produced a heavy foot stomping modern classic. Up next, Patrick Topping, a personal favourite of mine right now, delivering a groove infused colourful trip very much his flavour. Last but not least the infectious sounds of the mischievous outfit from Germany Bunte Brummler, doing in my opinion one of their best works to date with their techy and dubby yet rich in colour musical house jams. I'm very proud of this whole project; I have taken my time over it to ensure its life on the shelf and will come out with a limited run of gold vinyls."

Route 94

Route 94 | Fly 4 Life EP

After making an impact with his track, ‘My Love’ – now heading to the top of the UK singles charts – and producing a track for Katy B’s ‘Little Red’ album, 19-year old Route 94 is back with his debut ‘Fly 4 Life’ EP on Defected Records.

Sultry female vocals and 808 rim shot groove in the opening track, ´Tell You Why´, combine a touch of R&B and effects heavy vocals, creating the ideal track for dancing in a club or your living room. The EP’s title track, ‘Fly 4 Life’, opens with a captivating bassline, while the lusty vocal samples and massive white noise sweeps switch the track flawlessly between classic soul house and shadowy techno.

‘In My Heart’ and ´Walls Come Tumbling Down´ highlight the young producer´s deeper side showcasing warm bass synths, ethereal arpeggios and hypnotic vocal hooks. Already celebrated by the likes of Annie Mac and Skream, the EP should help solidify Route 94’s reputation as an international house staple. It’s out 31 March, check it out below.

Fedde Le Grand

Fedde Le Grand’s ‘Don’t Give Up’, which steams in after 11 minutes to Final Kid’s backdrop on UMF’s 15th edition after-movie, has had a TBC attached to its release since September last year. Now, on 24 March - as Miami Music Week kicks off - the full instrumental gets its Beatport release and Fedde recently teamed up with Final Kid once more for an extended preview, which you can check below.

Illyus & Barrientos

Illyus & Barrientos | ‘Do You Wanna’

The latest track from Glasgow Underground comes from a new collaboration between existing GU talent, Illyus and Barrientos. ‘Do Anything You Wanna’ is a two-track EP from the pair who have previously remixed Grum together (picking up support from Pete Tong’s Essential Selection straight off the bat) and delivered solo EPs for GU, Morris Audio and Seven Music.

Already seeing support from a huge range of DJs including Radio 1’s Pete Tong and Danny Howard, Skream, Huxley, Sasha, Kiki and Amine Edge, the hype for the track is intensifying on a weekly basis and looks set to be a big one for the label. Add in plays and interviews on BBC Radio 1 Xtra and you start to see that this could be a huge track for the duo.

Illyus & Barrientos | ‘Do You Wanna’

Glasgow Underground: “We're just a little bit proud of this collaboration. We've been working with these two guys for a while now and thought their talents would be a perfect match. After a bit of cajoling, we got the two of them in the studio and boy are we glad we did.

“There is no other way to put this – ‘Do Anything You Wanna’ is an absolute anthem. The vocals are hooky like ‘Shake That’, pianos classy like Ejeca's finest and its beats walk around like they are bigger than Prince. An instant dancefloor bomb that should propel two of Glasgow's hottest new talents on to seriously big things.

“‘The Times We Shared’ is a bit moodier, but equally floor-filling. It oozes vocal style like the best of Diynamic but with some added super-tough Glaswegian beats that take the record into the kind of territory Deep Dish would be in (if they were still making records as good as they did in '94 today).”

It’s out on Beatport on 10 March, everywhere else on 24 March, check it out below.

Karuva

Karuva | Shockwaves

In such a competitive scene, it’s always good to see new talent emerge, especially someone who’s not only making it as a DJ, but is multi-talented, and uses these musical skills to produce his own music. Drums, keyboards, guitar and vocals - it’s all in the mix when Karuva makes a new production – and today see the release of his debut EP, ‘Shockwaves’, on Canadian label Phoenix Music. Join us for a journey into the deeper side of house music…

How would you describe yourself?

I'm a house producer and DJ that likes to think out of the box. In the studio, I play live instruments, in the form of electric guitar, freestyle piano and drums - which will also be incorporated into my live DJ sets.

How would you describe your sound?

Thanks to my musical background and travels abroad, I'm influenced by artists as wide ranging as Jamie Jones to Jimi Hendrix. My productions are house, but there is an element of deep funk and breakbeat in most of my tracks.

Who are some or your favourite house producers right now?

Really digging the musical output of guys including Hot Since 82 and Kolombo right now – it’s cool, it’s underground and it rocks dance floors.

Karuva

Your debut EP is out today, can you tell us more about it?

'Shockwaves' is released by Phoenix Music (www.phoenixmusicinc.com), which is a cool Canadian house label. I'm glad to be signed by this imprint, as others on the label include rising stars such as Will Clarke and legends such as Todd Terry. What have you got planned for the forthcoming months?

My second EP (called 'Bomba') will be out in April; it’s a three-track journey through my interpretation of deep house. I've been taken on by a manager and booking agent, I'm starting a radio show and I’m looking forward to DJing in Ibiza this summer at various label parties.

Yves Larock Feat Roland Richards

Yves Larock Feat Roland Richards

With new edits coming from Muzzaik, Simone Vitullo, LaBass, Mark Ursa and Leonardo Glovibes plus stadium, arena and sunshine mixes which should be ideal for festival, Miami and Ibiza plays, Yves Larock’s ‘Zookey 2K14’ is back again and looks set to win over a whole new set of fans.

Originally released in 2005, signed to Defected and Africanism and a certified classic with huge radio airplay and dance floor recognition, ‘Zookey (Lift Your Leg Up)’ was a blend of upbeat percussive lines, sleazy electronic guitars and Caribbean melodies fused around Roland Richards’ rolling vocal line.

Yves Larock
Yves Larock

For 2014, the vibe is still the same thanks to the reoccurrence of the instantaneously recognisable central riff, but the tone has most definitely veered off in the general direction of all things deep. Long-term Larock stalwart Muzzaik offers up a chugging, escalating rendition perfect for that mid-set progressive power-up, while the package’s Main Mix takes the certifiably filthy route.

Italian nu-wave producer Simone Vitullo delivers a stripped back edit full of muted samples and undulating deep elements, Labass highlights the instrumental and choral sections that elevated the original. Brazil’s Mark Ursa brings the bass for a dirty rendition that twists and warps in and out of the original; Italian veteran Leonardo Glovibes puts together a Latin-inspired remix packed with syncopated beats and high-end percussion. Rounding off are the Stadium, Arena and Sunshine remixes, doing exactly what they say on the tin.

It’s out 7 March on Millia Records, check it out below.

Wookie Feat. Zak Abel

2013 saw Jason Chue AKA Wookie, release his own track 'The Hype' featuring Eliza Doolittle (Strictly Rhythm) and remix (amongst others) Disclosure’s 'Voices' (PMR/Island) and Wilkinson’s 'Too Close' (Ram/Virgin). 2014 sees the producer and remixer, regarded by many as one of the most influential founding fathers of UK Garage, return with the beautiful soulful track 'Higher', featuring the vocal talents of newcomer Zak Abel. 18-year old singer/songwriter Zak, hailing from North West London is introduced to the scene by Wookie and featuring alongside Zak is the sound of Rudimental’s trumpet player, Mark Crown. Damon Albarn

Daman Albarn | Everyday Robots

Recorded last year at Albarn’s West London studio 13, his forthcoming album, ‘Everyday Robots’, is produced by Richard Russell of XL, with whom Damon produced Bobby Womack’s ‘The Bravest Man In The Universe’ - and features guest appearances from Brian Eno and Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes).

Led by title track ‘Everyday Robots’, the 12 songs here invite the listener into Albarn’s world for a ‘one-to-one’ and are possibly the most soul-searching and autobiographical since his musical journey began: a career that started with Blur and spans Gorillaz, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Mali Music, Monkey: Journey To The West, Dr Dee and Africa Express.

The songs’ subject matter is more directly personal than before and is inspired by Albarn’s experiences from early childhood to now, including the trappings of our modern existence, computer games, mobile phones and nature versus technology.

The songs’ subject matter is more directly personal than before and is inspired by Albarn’s experiences from early childhood to now, including the trappings of our modern existence, computer games, mobile phones and nature versus technology.

The lead, title track ‘Everyday Robots’ is accompanied by a video directed by artist and designer Aitor Throup. The film is a digital portrait of Albarn by Throup and uses CGI software and actual cranial scans and facial reconstruction techniques to explore and reveal the process of building a uniquely personal portrait of an artist and individual.

Throup also creatively directed the visual concepts for the single and album artwork, as well as shooting Albarn for the album cover image.

Damon Albarn will headline at Latitude Festival on Saturday 19 July 2014 with a band including guitarist Seye, drummer Pauli The PSM, bassist Jeff Wootton and Mike Smith on keyboards.

'Everyday Robots' will be available as a digital download, CD and 12” vinyl on 28 April.

Jose Burgos Feat. Kenny Bobien | For Your Love

Now, he’s reunited once again with the powerfully soulful voice of Kenny Bobien, one of our all time favourite soulful house vocalists.

Jose and Kenny’s track, ‘For Your Love’, epitomises Burgos’ inimitable upbeat and organic sound as he includes an eclectic array of percussion, brass instruments and a strumming guitar. Here, South African rising producer, Cuebur, is on remix duties, adding his own distinct flavour to the cut; raw sounding percussion and warm atmospherics combine, resulting in a gentle, emotionally affecting reworking. The Chain Gang Of 1974 | Sleepwalking (Juventa Remix)

Hot on the heels of ‘Move Into Light’ and remix duty on US duo Tritonal’s ‘Now Or Never’, Enhanced Music’s Juventa recently revealed that the next track to receive his spin will be one synonymous with one of the most successful video games of all time – Grand Theft Auto V. His reimagining of ‘Sleepwalking’ by The Chain Gang Of 1974 is set for release on Monday 10th March exclusively through Beatport.

Juventa
Juventa

Having been the theme tune to the official GTA V trailer as well as featuring on the game’s soundtrack, the original has been gaining fans, support and millions of online plays ever since. Now the Dutch producer jacks up the tempo and breathes new life into the song by taking it to the dance floor and giving clubbers something they can really move to. Harnessing the vocals and guitar of the initial track, Juventa has transformed the hook into something ardent and infectious that sits perfectly on top of the beat.

With more than 100 million people who’ve played Grand Theft Auto V and countless more that have watched the TV ads, this could do well when it drops on March 10. Check it out below.

Prok & Fitch Feat Max Linen

Prok & Fitch Feat Max Linen | Man With Soul

Prok & Fitch return to Toolroom Records with the recently released, ‘Man With Soul’, featuring the vocals of Max Linen. Following the success of their 'Toolroom Knights' album at the close of last year and recent BBC Radio 1 support from Steve Angello and NERVO, 2014 may well be Prok & Fitch’s biggest year yet.

With a US tour planned this month, which sees the duo bring their beats to every corner of the continent, Prok & Fitch, ‘Man With Soul’ focuses on a high-energy, filtered disco groove that relentlessly builds towards a big drop where Max Linen’s vocal takes hold. Heavily featured in Mark Knight’s DJ sets, this is a well-crafted track that should get widespread support from a cross genre of DJs from Miami WMC and right through the Ibiza season. The track is out now, has summer all over it, and should do well for the duo and the label, so check it out below.

Paul Trainer

Paul Trainer | Receptor

A man no stranger to Vandit’s discography, Scotland's Paul Trainer has been producing music for half a decade now. Following up the likes of ‘Totality’, ‘Face The Music’ and ‘Soundscape’, he’s returns to the door of Paul van Dyk's Berlin-based Vandit Records with ‘Receptor'.

On his Original Mix, the young Scotsman forms a nucleus for the track of pounding drums and rolling bass, further synthesising the sonic compound with squally, psy-like 303 and high wire tense synth bursts. Into the drop, ’Receptor’ then opens up into a wash of immersive, mesmeric pads and chords, before Paul reconnects the drums and synths. Having already displayed his remixing skills on Paul van Dyk’s ‘If You Want My Love’ last year, for ‘Receptor’’s rebuild Germany’s Niels von Ahorn takes the tone darker and more driving. Recalibrating the track’s tempo to prog-trance pace, he swirls the atmosphere deep, creating an infectious linearism, then builds the mix with short drops and equally quick and effective bring-backs. It’s out now, check it below.

Ray Foxx & Tom Piper Feat. Ayah Marar

Ray Foxx & Tom Piper Feat. Ayah Marar

Ray Foxx is back with a brand new release following on from his top 40 summer track, ‘Boom Boom (Heartbeat)’ and the funk infused ‘Fireworks’. This time he joins forces on the production with Australian bassmaker, Tom Piper and Ayah Marar steps up on the vocal delivery following her collaboration with Calvin Harris on ‘Thinking About You’. Together the trio create this dynamic, bass heavy, synth infused track, topping it off with a heavy percussion filled backdrop.

Ray Foxx first burst on to the scene in 2011 with ‘The Trumpeter’, later releasing vocal version ‘La Musica’, featuring Lovelle, which received support from Annie Mac, Trevor Nelson and Zane Lowe to name a few.  Ray came back with ‘Boom Boom’ last summer which charted in the UK at number 12. The Foxx has been busy with recent remixes for Sigma and Dizzee Rascal, as well as providing a fortnightly guest mix for MistaJam on BBC 1Xtra, and hosting his own weekly show on Kiss FM’s digital station Kiss Fresh.

Fellow producer Tom Piper is signed to Ministry Of Sound in Australia, and is possibly one of the most in demand DJs and producers in the Southern Hemisphere. He’s had collaborations with Tommy Trash, Micky Slim & Majestic and most recently his remix of Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr’s massive track ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’ is currently at #1 on the Australian club chart.

Dubbed the Queen of bass, Ayah Marar provides the lyrics on ‘Only Way’. Ayah has had collaborations with Calvin Harris, DJ Fresh, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and Toddla T to name a few, not to mention recent tours with Example, Camo & Krooked and Calvin Harris himself. Having been heavily involved in the D&B scene from a young age, Ayah is an established singer, DJ and MC. Her debut album ‘The Real’ was released in 2012, ‘The Raver’, one of the singles from the album, had a remix from the Foxx himself.

It’s out on Strictly Rhythm on 16 March, check it out below.

GotSome Feat. The Get Along Gang

GotSome Feat. The Get Along Gang

Like many tracks of its nature, ‘Bassline’ began its journey as an underground track and has since risen to possibly become somewhat of an anthem. Defected Records released the Bristolian duo GotSome’s debut last year, with ‘Bassline’ promptly climbing No. 4 in the Beatport House chart. Now, with so much remix potential the track has been picked apart by some of the greatest minds in house music.

Up first is house legend Kenny Dope who provides a duskier rendition that commences with pounding off-beat percussion and pitched-down vocals before erupting into a wave of convulsing ethereal synths. Friend Within darkens the tone using echoing vocals and sinister synths to make way for a drop consisting of 2-step percussion and a sullen hook. Finally, established duo Chocolate Puma demonstrate their high-octane approach to house production with a prolonged build-up that progressively elevates before hitting a monstrous barrage of throbbing low-end and thudding kicks.

It’s out 17 February, check it out below.

Gareth Emery Feat. Bo Bruce

Gareth Emery Feat. Bo Bruce | U

British producer Gareth Emery is back with ‘U’, a brand new song featuring Bo Bruce that’s out today on his own label, Garuda. It’s the first single from his brand new album, ‘Drive’, set for release 1 April and creates an insight into what the forthcoming album has to offer. The track is a love song with ethereal vocals and euphoric synths combined to create a nice slab of music.

The pop-inspired melodies paired with vocals by Bo Bruce - a second place contestant from The Voice (UK) - creates an uplifting, emotive sound, before dropping into Emery’s signature electro synths. The track comes with a video directed and produced by Alex Maxwell at The Mill. Making its debut today, it features a young couple, hopelessly in love, trekking down through the American countryside. Along with appearances from both Bo and Gareth, the video captures the perfect summer romance.

Gareth has created a blend of trance, house and electro that he uses to build his melody-focused club tracks that form his greatest successes, which include a long-running podcast series and his own label Garuda. Stateside, Gareth will appear at Ultra Music Festival in March and make his Coachella festival debut this April. Check the video for ‘U’ below.

Todd Terry

Todd Terry | Feel The Sun

Todd Terry serves another jam in the form of ‘Feel The Sun’, which comes with remixes from youngTEE, Mineo, Howson’s Groove and Sona Vabos. In his time, New York City’s Todd Terry has been Grammy nominated and has turned out seminal hits like ‘Keep On Jumpin’, ‘Somethin’ Going On’, ‘I’ll House You’ and has released on well established labels like Get Physical, Cadenza and Toolroom. This new single is made as a celebration of the global return of house music into the public’s conscious.

Todd Terry | Feel The Sun

The original version of ’Feel The Sun’ has a classic feel with its quick licked piano stabs, trademark big kicks and boisterous house drums. The vocal is a nod to house music’s ‘90s heyday and the vocal sample finishes things off in top style.

Southern Fried artist youngTEE then flips it into a rising, UK garage vibe with reversed basslines, coarse claps and all manner of urban flourishes before Mineo, who has released on Hot Creations and is soon to appear on Hypercolour, then strips the thing back to metallic hits and muffled bass blasts. It’s a slinky, percussive groove that rolls on and on. Howson’s Groove fuse many different urban styles to great effect and do so again here with their sketchy, echo drenched, bass leaning refix. Closing out the package is Sona Vabos who layers in plenty of malfunctioning synth blasts and chops up the original vocal into little stabs. It’s out 3 March on Southern Fried Records.

Gorgon City

Gorgon City

Gorgon City's latest single ‘Ready For You Love’ received its first exclusive play on R1 recently as Zane Lowes' ‘Hottest Record in the World’ and features the vocal talents of MNEK who co-wrote the track with Matt and Kye.

'Ready For Your Love' is a track that further establishes Gorgon City’s ability in capturing top performances from their collaborators. MNEK’s soaring soulful delivery marries perfectly with the duo’s signature production touches, bringing together the beatific agility of two-step with the gravity and resonance of deep house, dropping into an instantly addictive chorus hook. We're liking this a lot and with a plethora of mixes to choose from, this looks set to be another huge club track. Check it out below.

Shoxy & Alexandar Ivkovic

Shoxy & Alexandar Ivkovic

Serbia’s Shoxy and Alexandar Ivkovic are regarded as two of the finest DJs on the Serbian circuit and now they get set to release their debut on Desolat, titled the ‘Red Beans’ EP. The EP showcases the duo’s talents across four rhythmic house mutations. ‘Red Beans’ is an impressive opener which is characterised by its clever arrangement and off-kilter beat. Soaring synths, a chanting vocal and further deft sounds are added to the mix resulting in an engrossing and hypnotic track.

Shoxy & Alexandar Ivkovic

‘Tromotonik’ develops around a more familiar 4/4 framework, with strong bass and hard-hitting percussion from the outset. Additional vocal elements make this a possible peak time record to keep a crowd moving. ‘Seattle’ is another tightly produced energetic house track. Contagious right until the last note it sees glitchy vocal fragments and warm chords wash over the punchy beat, while ‘A Tale Of Rhythm’ feels like a ride on a rusty swing with a boom box on your shoulder.

The first 12” pressing comes on transparent green vinyl with the label artwork by Digital Primate. It’s out 3 February.

Rachel K Collier

Rachel K Collier provided the vocals for Ray Foxx’s track ‘Boom Boom (Heartbeat)’. One of the memorable songs of the summer, the track was the latest in a series of collaborations for the 23-year old self taught grade 8 pianist and alumni of the Royal Welsh School Of Music.

Rachel K Collier
Rachel K Collier

Since moving to London in 2012 from her native Wales, Rachel has been busy writing and recording with an array of UK producers including Lung, Wookie, Netsky, Mutated Forms and Mat Zo. Now stepping out into the spotlight, she debuts with her solo single ‘Predictions’. Produced by London duo Blue Slims, ‘Predictions’ is a bass heavy, club groove juxtaposed with Rachel’s songwriting and subtle vocal delivery.

Along with the original, remixes are included from DJ S.K.T (producer of the remix of Miguel’s ‘adorn’) and rising London based producers, Billon.

Already the recipient of a Radio Ripper gong from 1xtra’s Mistajam, picked as Sarah Jane Crawford’s Record of The Week, and hailed as the ‘Best of British’ by Radio 1Xtra’s TwinB and Yasmin Evans, the track should highlight the Welsh as one to watch for 2014.

Solarstone Featuring Lemon

Solarstone Featuring Lemon

With his Vangelis homage ‘Love Theme From Blade Runner’ doing well in end-of-year polls, Solarstone’s next single excursion sees the Pure Trance guardian dip back into his latest album. Moving from ‘Love’ to ‘Lovers’, he’s teamed up with cult New York-based synth-pop outfit Lemon.

Solarstone Featuring Lemon | Lovers

Across its original versions, ‘Lovers’ is a knowing glance back by Solarstone at his formative musical years. Its production and vocals draw affectionate inspiration from a wide artistic palette, with Erasure, Depeche Mode, Roxy Music and Joy Division being just some of its many touchstone influences. Featuring introspective and deeply personal lyrics and vocals from Lemon’s frontman Roger D. Smith, ‘Lovers’ lays and layers them against crisp percussion, atmospheric analogue synths and drum rolls. Bridging the decades Solarstone’s new Pure Mix version kick offs ‘Lovers’ remix collection. Throughout their intros they utilise high-impact kick-drums, echoing harmonics and the Pure Mixes’ leitmotif running basslines. Building potent levels of tension, the vocal affects a controlled burn on the drop before Solarstone hooks the swirling atmosphere and up-surging synths back in. It’s out 9 December on Black Hole Recordings.

Tiger Stripes | Sisters EP
Tiger Stripes | Sisters EP

Title-track 'Sisters' kicks things off with a bumping bassline and strong percussion and the track moves along until a distinctive vocal, which may possibly be one of the most memorable hooks of the year, enters the fold. ‘Sisters’ reminds you that there is always summer somewhere, a possible anthem.

Following on is ‘Keep A Movin’ which is a hypnotic rolling house track full of energy but with a darker vibe and an equally engrossing vocal. On remix duties, tINI instantly marks her personal stamp on the original by taking out much of the vocal, slowing the BPM and infusing a woosy meandering bassline with the original melody.

The cover painting is by Luio Onassis and  all tracks are available as MP3s via a download code that comes with the 12” release.

Danny Howells

Balance 024 Mixed By Danny Howells

‘Balance 024’ comes as the next chapter in Danny Howell’s compilations that have proven the calling card of his career. His numerous Global Underground volumes, Renaissance mixes and more besides have found a fond place in many a clubber’s home-listening collection, earning him a reputation as a musical storytellers in the electronic world.

‘Balance 024’ is Danny’s first freeform mix compilation proper since 2008, aside from a Dig Deeper label compendium.

Danny Howells: “It wasn't an intentional hiatus. I was focusing on my label for a while. I do like having a nice gap between albums though as it allows me to really stockpile the tracks I love so much. It's nice when you come to compile and you've got your favourite tunes from the last few years to pick from.

“I had a brief discussion with Balance a few years back so knew (hoped!) that a release was possibly still on the cards, so since then I was always semi-consciously thinking about the tracks I was buying and playing that I thought would be suited to an album. I'm talking about tracks that don't really age, and that mainly have some kind of soulful edge... gorgeous subtle melodies and so on. When the album idea was confirmed earlier this year it just boiled down to me filtering all those tracks I'd hoarded, making sure I focused on the ones that still did something to me, even after God knows how many listens.”

Danny Howells
Danny Howells

Putting together this mix was not simply a case of sitting in a dark room sifting through a load of tracks. His travels and experiences of recent years are all filtered into it, with manifold inspirations distilled therein. “Glastonbury had a huge impact on me this year and I used some of my time there to work on ideas for this mix,” says Danny. “I filled an old iPod with as many of my "shortlist" tracks as I could find and listened to them whenever I was in my camper van. I decided I really wanted to use The Mole’s tracks and the Will Saul remix one morning when the sun was rising and we'd all had a bit of a "moment" up on the hill.”

It’s out now.

Rank 1

Rank 1 | 13.11.11

You gotta love a slice of trance and when the Dutch pairing of Benno de Goeij and Piet Bervoets, aka Rank 1, produce a new track it's usually worth listening to. 2013 has already brought the M.I.K.E. collaboration 'Elements Of Life' and the big room 'Floorlifter'. Their latest track, ‘13.11.11’, rolls out at a tempo of 131.111BPMs, with its deep, bass-building atmosphere. Backed by top FX, de Goeij and Bervoets drive home its first elevating lead line, one that seizes the track’s centre ground.

Rank 1
Rank 1

Rank 1: “When we decided to produce a track this way, it wasn’t with a ‘why should we make this?’ attitude, but more like ‘why the hell shouldn’t we!’ We know its not ‘the usual’, but who says we have to play by the rules all the time!?”

‘13.11.11’ swirls the atmosphere minute by minute, working its way towards its next sequence. Around the 9th minute mark, Rank 1 instils a savannah-like atmosphere to the track, enacted by its angelic indolent flute-led riff. Then they once again begin to draw the euphoria back in, raising the tension sky-high again. It’s out now on High Contrast Recordings, check it out below.

Sonny Fodera Feat. Amber Jolene

Sonny Fodera Feat. Amber Jolene | Hold It Down

Sonny Fodera and Amber Jolene have once again reunited in another collaboration exhibiting their complimentary talents as artists. Jolene is responsible for the vocals on tracks including Mowgli ‘Back In The Day’ and Myomi ‘Sun In My Eyes’ as well as experiences both recording and performing with famous English ska band Madness.

Fodera should also be a familiar name to anyone who has been paying attention to the house scene this year with a season-long Ibiza residency as well as releases on Stealth Records, Onelove, Cajual Records, Defected and his own Beatdown imprint.

With ‘Hold It Down’, Fodera teases you in with atmospheric synths and a subtle introduction of Amber Jolene’s voice before unleashing a stomping bassy hook accompanied by Jolene’s now looping vocals. Midlands’ duo Chris Lorenzo and Kane aka Cause & Affect provide a remix with their signature bass fuelled jackin house twist. The remix is geared on a punchy snare, growling low-end and spooky lead keys that, when combined with Jolene’s voice, creates an eerie aura that makes this rendition sound like the evil sibling to the original. It’s out 11 November, check it out below.

After submitting video dance entries, 250 contestants were chosen to be filmed dancing in the endurance test and the video for ‘Eat Sleep Rave Repeat’ unveiled the overall winner, who won a £500 cash prize; the contestant who can dance non-stop for the longest time.

Fatboy Slim: "Me and Riva Starr were out vinyl shopping in Williamsburg, Brooklyn earlier this year when we met this dude ranting in the street about some three-day bender he had been on - and possibly still was… We hooked him into our Serato and chopped him up into a tune. I just wish we’d caught his full name..."

Selador

Selador Recordings

Both of Selador records’ central tenets Dave Seaman and Steve Parry have been frequently involved with the ADE conference since its inception, so it was only natural that they would present the label there this year. This recently released ADE sample is the fruit of that representation and is a collection of tracks of forward thinking electronic music that outlines their signature sound.

Former incumbents of the label's releases are welcomed back with Piemont, Han Haak and Danito & Agent! following on from their previous contributions. While new talent comes in the shape of established heavy hitters like Chris Fortier and Robert Babicz alongside new blood such as Kucna Muzika and Vrong.

In total the EP has 11 tracks, ranging from the house grooves of G-Pal’s ‘Veenza’ to the electronic techno of ‘Cuba’ from XY-Me. Elsewhere Rob Hes & Steve Slight combine on the percussion heavy ‘Shoot’, whilst the tribal lunacy of ‘Gimme Sum’ from Vrong is possibly the closest thing to a carnival encapsulated in electronic music.

The label was an integral force in Dave Seaman’s successful attempt to create the world’s first ever crowd funded mix compilation CD, the final copies of which have now been distributed to the history making participating pledgers.

Matt Tolfrey Feat Marshall Jefferson

Matt Tolfrey Feat Marshall Jefferson | The Truth

‘The Truth (Feat Marshall Jefferson)’, one of the standout tracks from Matt Tolfrey’s debut LP, ‘Word Of Mouth’, sees a full single release with additional remixes from Gerd’s Geeeman project and John Charnis.

Leftroom boss, Tolfrey, dropped his ‘Word Of Mouth’ LP late in 2012 and the project served as an insight into the influences and passions of the DJ/producer.

‘The Truth’ was a particular highlight for both listener and producer alike as it featured the vocals of one of the ‘godfathers of house’, Marshal Jefferson. Tolfrey’s original version opens the package with a strident simplicity. Bare bones house with classic influences distilled in to a contemporary slice of 4/4. LA-based producer Jon Charnis, an artist who has remixed work for Innervisions and No.19, turns in a moody late-night interpretation that drops Jefferson’s vocal input in favour of steadily building melodies. Dutch 4Lux boss, Gerd, dons his Geeeman for two versions which take on a rough-edged, brutalist house sensibility. Saturated Juno licks and 909 stomp form the backbone of both mixes but the ‘Deep Vox Voyage’ showcases rich chords and Marshall Jefferson while his ‘Rough Mix’ takes things even grittier. Check it out below, it’s out 21 October.

D.Ramirez

D.Ramirez | Open Your Eyes

Steve Aoki & Rune RK Feat RAS

Steve Aoki & Rune RK Feat RAS

Three musical minds have come together on Dim Mak's latest release, ‘Bring You To Life (Transcend)’. This progressive house track fuses label owner Steve Aoki with Rune RK, one of the creative minds behind the track ‘Calabria’. Defined by its warm lead sounds, ‘Transcend’ was one of the most popular tracks on Steve Aoki's ‘It's The End Of The World As We Know It’ EP from last December.

Now the track gets that extra edge with the passionate and sultry vocals of RAS. Originally appearing on the NEZZO & Summer School track ‘Shadows’, RAS has been eagerly anticipated to get back on the mic for another song. Riding on top of the production skills of Steve Aoki and Rune RK, RAS gives a firm example of his singing chops on ‘Bring You To Life’. The combination of RAS' delivery on the should see the track do well for the Dim Mak label. Check it out below, it’s out next week.

Djeff

From the balladry of ‘One Night’ to the hi-life flavoured hedonism of ‘Mutakala’ and from the Portuguese vocals on ‘Cuza Di Terra’ and ‘Esse Mambo’ to the pounding beats and horns of ‘Celebration’, which was made with the house dancers of New York in mind, ‘Soldier Ascension’ is a fine collection.

The son of a Cape-Verdean father and an Angolan mother, Tiago Baros, aka Djeff, was born in 1984 and grew up in Portugal hearing artists such as Michael Jackson, Europe, Michael Bolton, and Bryan Adams alongside his father’s collection of Kassav, Tabanka Jazz, Livity, Grace Evora and Eduardo Paim. But it was when he got into dance music, and especially house, inspired first by his sister’s cassette collection and later by DJs like Erick Morillo, that he began to bring his own diverse musical inspirations together.

With this album, his second following the release of ‘Malembe Malembe’ in 2010, Djeff has tried to make something different to what is happening in Angola right now.

“In Angola,” he says, “everyone is making Afro-house, but sometimes with too much drums so that it’s only about the beat, not about the melodies or instruments. In Portugal they loved ‘Cuza Di Terra,’ ‘Mutakala,’ Otoipenny,’ ‘Soldier Ascension’ and ‘A Little Bit Closer’. In Angola it is ‘Otoipeny,’ ‘Esse Mambo,’ ‘African Mermaid’ and ‘Soldier Ascension’. Here in the United States people have been enjoying more ‘Celebration,’ ‘African Mermaid’ and ‘Make Me Stronger,’ so it’s always different, which is good.

‘‘Some of the people in Angola see me as a pioneer and somebody who has started, a little bit, the production of house music in Angola.”

'Soldier Ascension' is out now on Tribe Records.

Mike La Funk Feat. Max C

Mike La Funk Feat. Max C

Berlin-based Mike La Funk reveals his brand new release 'Don't Wanna Be Alone' for Pacha Recordings, working for the first time with vocalist Max C who injects a rich gospel flavour. The package also features remixers including Soul Avengerz.who opt for a deeper and mysterious vibe, showcasing a sexy nocturnal side.

Jason Chance creates an instant appeal for the young clubbers with his fast and sturdy beat science and ATFC aims for the main floor with hands in the air, armed with persuasive beats that accentuate the keys, driving the track into a more sinewy territory. Upcoming producers Greg Funk (aka House Of Virus), opts for driving beats and soaring synth drama and Alec Hall works the floor with a peak time Dub.

At home on both the turntables and in the studio, Mike La Funk  has held numerous residencies across Germany with guest spots around the world, along with notable releases including 'Shake This World' with Jason Caesar on The Brothers and his latest track, 'Music Is Life', with Corey Andrew on Pacha Recordings rocking the German dance charts for six weeks!

Max C’s releases with James Black and Kari Kaivola as 3rd Nation gained much success with their second album produced by Stonebridge in 1993, along with the single ‘I Believe’ which landed the group their first Billboard hit coming in at #8. Max C released his debut solo album ‘Passin Tyme’ in 2004, alongside acclaimed singles ‘Caroline’ and ‘Time to Get it On’. It’s out tomorrow.

Terri Walker

Terri Walker | He Loves Me

The first release on the re-launched Soul Heaven Records label sees Osunlade make his return to remix duties, crafting Terri Walker’s ‘He Loves Me’ into his own personal interpretation of music. The Yoruba label boss’ touch means that he draws on the key emotive elements of every piece he lays his hands on to create a carefully crafted rendition of the original with warm and uplifting vibes.

His Yoruba Soul Mix utilizes Walker’s vocals whilst softening and simplifying the chords of the original’s piano riff. Meanwhile his woody percussion draws on his knack for comprising different world music, whilst subtle additions of bar chimes generate elegant and emotive crescendos. The multi-instrumentalist includes various layers of combined sounds that interlink to produce a result highlighting every minor detail.

The Yoruba Soul Dub bares resemblance to the original track and its world elements, but it distances itself from its softness by involving a driving kick and a bassy hook to accompany Walker’s vocals. Rounding up the trio is the Original mix where British singer/songwriter Donae’O is in charge of production. With a career track record that demonstrates his various different talents, Donae’O’s knowledge and experience of both house and R&B make him the ideal cohort to Terri Walker. It’s out now.

Azari & III

Various Artists - 'Azari & III Presents - Body Language Vol. 13'
Get Physical

Azari & III make their Get Physical debut by compiling and mixing the latest edition of the highly regarded tastemaker series, Body Language. Volume 13 features 2 mixes, one from Dinamo Azari and the other from Alixander III and together the two produce a techno-driven soundscape that shows a different side of Azari & III and a fresh sound on Get Physical Music.

Hailing from Toronto, Azari & III have been plugging away independently for many years – it was in 2008 that they came together and officially formed the act we know today. One year later their first single, ‘Hungry For The Power’ struck a chord with dance patrons everywhere. They would follow up with ‘Reckless (With Your Love)’ to confirm the hype, drawing even more attention to their unique sound and throwing the Canadian quartette under the spotlight and into the international tour circuit where they would set the stage for their debut album ‘Azari & III’.

First up is Dinamo with his mix that is, in his own words, “Too hard for the day, too soft for the night.” The intro sets a thick ambience for the mix while gliding gracefully into the first track. Featuring two new, exclusive tracks from Dinamo himself, the mix spans over 38 minutes and utilizes “pre-teen mix & arranging methods” to create a “modern day mix-tape with a new wave approach.” Dinamo then ends it on the same note he began, slowly fading out into the ‘Outro’ and completing the first half of Body Language Vol. 13.

Dinamo Azari and Alixander III
Dinamo Azari and Alixander III

Mix two is from Alixander III who says: “My mix was born from memories of cassette mix tapes from my early-90s industrial/rave days. I’d get copies of mixes recorded from the radio in Detroit where cousins were going to school. These mixes featured classic Chicago and Detroit techno from the ‘80s, current jams from the day and also some genre bending inclusions tossed in, stuff by Depeche Mode, Cabaret Voltaire, and I’ll never forgot the first time I heard Cocteau Twins´ ‘Cherry Colored Funk’.

“With my side of the Body Language mix, I tried to recapture the flow and freedom of those seminal mixes, deep dark technoid excursions punctuated by the occasional moment of cathartic departure... I also have a love affair with soaring, blissful female vocalizations, they take me to a higher place, and those included here range from distanced infatuations to gropingly close friends.

“I began the process by listening back to my old Maxwell’s and reminding myself what was so engulfing about them. At some point during these listenings I must have shed a tear, of sentiment, joy, loss and the passage of time. Guarded memories and forgotten greatness from an era that forged who I would soon become... Fast forward to present day and I’m still swimming in that sea of unhinged emotion, random connections, odd beauty and dark love that has fueled and sustained me ever since. I hope this mix fuels and sustains you, the listener, if even for a moment.”

Martin Buttrich & Mousse T

Martin Buttrich & Mousse T | Session 1

The latest offering from Desolat sees Martin Buttrich come together with long-time friend Mousse T on ‘Session 1’. This two track 12” set for release on October 14, sees both producers release their first original material in over two years and demonstrate why they remain two respected producers in the scene.

Martin Buttrich & Mousse T | Session 1

Opener ‘Sunseeker’ kicks off the EP with a teasing guitar riff which is supplemented by resounding pulses of warm bass. Further elements are added into the equation soon enough, such as a warped spoken word vocal and numerous melodic textures and trippy flourishes which all come together, building and yielding as the track drops back into its rolling sun kissed groove.

On the flip-side is ‘Smack Back’, which is marginally the more restrained of the two tracks on offer, characterised by a succession of subtle misshapen sounds, twisted effects and an ascending synth which compliments the punchy percussion and melodic stabs. It’s out October 14. Cover painting by Luio Onassis.

Hagenaar & Albrecht

Hagenaar & Albrecht Feat Sarah McLeod | Love Is Hell

After a two years absence, Dutch/Austrian duo Hagenaar & Albrecht are back with their latest track, ‘Love Is Hell’, which sees them return to their distinctive ‘H&A’ sound with a rock intense vocal from Aussie rocker Sarah McLeod.

Hagenaar & Albrecht rose to fame in 2008 with their global hit ‘What Would We Do’, broken on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 Show, then climaxing by them remixing the likes of Kesha, True Tiger, Professor Green, Wynter Gordon and multi Grammy winner Toni Braxton. In 2011 they signed to Atlantic’s dance imprint BigBeat, releasing the 2011 track ‘I Won’t Let You Down’, remixed by Albin Myers and bootlegged by Axwell.

H&A have spent the last two years going it alone and exploring their own desires, with Patrick going onto remix the likes of Rudimental, Martin Solveig and the cream of the UK pop scene as well as gracing the Radio 1 airwaves on a regular basis. Alistair became label manager for Destined Records and set up shop building a label management company now controlling over eight separate labels, plus still finding time to produce a more underground sound on such labels as Stealth. They both continue to produce their radio show for the Radio FG syndicated out to over 100 other stations. It’s out October 7 on Bedtime Records.

Mark Knight & Funkagenda | Man With The Red Face

Next up in Toolroom Records Anniversary Remixes series is Mark Knight and Funkagenda’s huge ‘Man With The Red Face’, which has been reinterpreted by Dutch producer Hardwell, Toolroom regular Rene Amesz and longstanding house DJ/producer ATFC.

A monumental track in the history of Toolroom Records, Mark Knight and Funkagenda’s cover of Laurent Garnier’s ‘Man With The Red Face’ cemented the label’s position in the dance music scene, winning Best Ibiza Track 2008 at Pacha’s Ibiza DJ Awards and Beatport’s Best Tech House Track of 2008. Wookie Feat Eliza Doolittle

Wookie Feat Eliza Doolittle

With Wookie’s debut release, ‘Battle’, and his underground track ‘Scrappy’, plus his remix of Sia’s ‘Little Man’, Wookie quickly emerged as one of the key players in the UK Garage scene.
So it’s no surprise that the current resurgence in bass-lead, funk inflected tracks has found the East London resident being name-checked by the likes of Disclosure and Rudimental.

Wookie’s production CV reads like a who’s who of R&B infused hit records having produced and remixed the likes of Jessie J, Rizzle Kicks, Sia, Justin Timberlake, Roll Deep and Ray Foxx.
Wookie’s latest single, ‘The Hype’, is an infectious contemporary house track featuring the vocals and writing talents of Eliza Doolittle, who most recently assaulted the airwaves and charts with her Disclosure collaboration ‘You & Me’. As Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ MistaJam says, “Wookie is so back on form, it's like he never left. ‘The Hype’ oozes class." Check it out below, it’s out on the very cool Strictly Rhythm Records.

Kevin Saunderson Presents Inner City

Kevin Saunderson Presents Inner City | Good Life

Written and produced by Kevin Saunderson and featuring the vocals of Paris Grey, ‘Good Life’ was released in 1988 and went on to become one of the defining tunes of its era, maintaining “classic” status ever since. Some 25 years later, the latest producers to deliver their renditions for the first batch of 2013 remixes are Pig & Dan, Markus Lauc, Matt Smallwood, Ian O’Donovan and Dantiez Saunderson & White Chocolate.

Kevin Saunderson Presents Inner City | Good Life
Kevin Saunderson Presents Inner City | Good Life

Pig & Dan deliver a stripped back, instrumental version of ‘Good Life’, concentrating on its tough techno beats. Glasgow’s Marcus Lauc reworking puts the prominence on the house keys underlined with a stomping techno bass. Matt Smallwood takes a softer approach as his version focuses on more of the original’s core elements. Irishman Ian O’Donovan has a sound compared to Detroit techno and was a good choice for this new phase of remixes. Dantiez Saunderson is the middle son of Ann and Kevin Saunderson and has recently been impressing with his releases on KMS, proving that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. His musical partner, Kevin Castro aka White Chocolate, was born in Columbia, raised in New York and currently resides in Miami. Having last come together on KMS for ‘Logarythm’ (KMS-119), they now return for this adaptation. In addition, a competition ran on Beatport Play in June to remix the track for inclusion on the release and on 8th August the winner was announced, with the prize going to Contepella for this Breakbeat version. Phase 1 remixes are out August 27 on KMS.

London-based solo artist G.Logan continues to establish himself with his productions. Boasting previous production credits for the likes of Kelis, Jay Sean and Craig David, his latest release, ‘How Did We’, on Defected Records acts as further evidence of his talent.

First heard on his self-produced 2012 mix-tape ‘Almost Gave Up’, ‘How Did We’ combines deep and atmospheric house vibes with warm vocals, highlighting his soul and R&B background. The synergy is a melodic narrative focusing on two people’s coming to terms with their relationship.

First up on the remix front is Jovonn’s Mix which is led by a fuzzy bassline and Logan’s now chopped vocals before introducing his emotive chorus topped with piano chords and warm synths. Friend Within’s version utilises heavily swung percussion which compliments the stuttered vocals before gradually building into a mammoth drop and what may be one of the bassline records of the year. Jovonn makes a second outing on the release with his Deeper Deep Mix and finally there is the Club Edit of Logan’s original. It’s out September 16, check it out below.

Kenny Summit & Director’s Cut Featuring Yasmeen

Kenny Summit & Director’s Cut Featuring Yasmeen

‘Loving You’ from Kenny Summit, Director’s Cut & Yasmeen, was originally unleashed last year on Good For You Records, hitting No.1 on Traxsource and stayed there for a whole month. Now it’s been remixes for this summer’s dancefloors, getting a makeover from top DJ/producers Dave Mayer & Husky.

Together the boys have turned out two feel-good mixes; one armed with a deep ‘90s bass groove, bumping beats and warm Rhodes that bubble under Yasmeen’s vocal; and a sparkling disco tinged chuggy dub mix, both of which should see further success for the track.

Director’s Cut is a production duo comprising of Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper. They first launched the project in 2011, signing to Nocturnal Groove, with the single ‘I’ll Take You There’, which featured long time friend and vocalist Jamie Principle on vocals. They have since gone on to reignite anthems such as Frankie’s ‘Your Love’, ‘The Whistle Song’ and Sylvester’s ‘Mighty Real’, to new productions including ‘Get Over U’ ft B Slade and ‘Let Yourself Go’ with Sybil, among many others.

From his early days spinning at NYC's infamous Limelight and Tunnel along side DJs like Moby, DJ Premier, Keoki and Supa DJ Dimitry, to present day where he overseas the operations of his record label, Good For You Records, Kenny Summit continues to focus on quality underground music. The releases on GFY along with his stable of artists speak for themselves: hiphop legends like Grand Puba and The Artifacts to house legends like Frankie Knuckles and Todd Terry, all present. Gearing up for a 20 city tour that spans from London to Bangkok in autumn/Fall of 2013, you can expect new tracks from Kenny Summit and his label every month.

Yasmeen Sulieman is an American singer who started out on Magic Johnson's record label, MCA Records in 2002 releasing her ‘Blue Jeans’ single. Her debut album, ‘When Will It Be Me’ was released in the Japan later that year. In July 2007, when Karla Mosley announced her departure of the band Hi-5, Yasmeen took over her place. In 2009, she signed with Strictly Rhythm/Defected Records and has recorded a few dance singles with various DJs including Copyright, DJ Gomi, Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper as Director’s Cut and Kenny Summit, among others.

Dutch DJ / producer Dave Mayer’s first production project was a remix of JJK’s ‘Primitive Future’ on Soulfuric and he has since grown a reputation to deliver high quality remixes and tracks for labels like Strictly Rhythm, Soulfuric, OM Records, Hardsoul Pressings, Salted Music, Ultra, among others. One of Australia’s most prominent DJ/ producers, Husky, has a vast discography of productions and remixes on some of the world’s leading dance labels, such as Salted Music, Guesthouse, Shifted Music, Ultra, Bargrooves and more. He also is one half of the popular production duo Random Soul with partner Yogi.

‘Loving You’ will be released on Traxsource August 19.

Barrientos

Barrientos

Glasgow Underground continues 2013 with the late-summer debut release from new artist Barrientos, entitled ‘Feel The Waves’.

23-year old Glasgow-based, Barrientos was discovered by Glasgow Underground via a DJ mix on the synthglasgow.com blog where he’d combined tracks from Matthew Styles, Vince Watson, Atjazz and more into an impressive flow.

Barrientos
Barrientos

Born in the USA and raised by Chilean and English parents, Barrientos studied classic music before making his forays into electronic music via remixes for Romanthony, Visitor and Walker & Royce for GU. ‘Feel The Waves’ takes in five tracks with each track bringing a different vibe. From the skipping garage funk of ‘And Uh’ and M1-led ‘On My Mind’ to the blissed out, vocal deep house of ‘Feel Waves’ there’s real musical depth here. When the tempos drop a little with the electronic disco of ‘Los Suenos’ and the beatless ‘Eventide (outro)’ the melodies breathe even more and further showcase Barrientos’ slick touch. It’s out August 19 on Beatport.

Bizarre Inc

Bizarre Inc

British label, Vinyl Solution, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year by making its entire back catalogue available digitally for the first time. The anniversary is spearheaded by the re-release of Bizarre Inc’s classic ‘Playing With Knives’. Released on 28 July, the track has been reworked by Utah Saints, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Timothy Allan & Mark Loverush, and Magnus J, who are helping to introduce the track to a whole new generation of electronic music fans.

Bizarre Inc was initially formed by Dean Meredith and Mark Archer in Stafford in 1989. Archer moved on to form Altern 8, and Dean was then joined by DJ/producers, Andrew Meecham and Carl Turner. ‘Playing With Knives’ was originally released in 1991 but, like many tracks of the time, it was a club anthem but didn’t initially chart, it eventually reached No.4 when it was reissued after the chart success of their follow-up ‘Such A Feeling’. A subsequent single, ‘I’m Gonna Get You’, reached No.2 the following year followed by their debut album ‘Energique’.

Vinyl Solution was founded by J. Saul Kane of Depth Charge (also the label’s A&R), Alain De La Mata and Yves Guillemot, boss of the Vinyl Solution record shop on Portobello Road. The Notting Hill based label hit initial success with acts Depth Charge, Eon & Rio Rhythm Band, before Bizarre Inc’s ‘Playing With Knives’ became an instant rave anthem. Other artists on the label included Stupids, pioneering Britcore rappers, Gunshot, The Senseless Things, Subject 13 and Jon Roca aka Midi Rain.

Steve Angello and Matisse & Sadko

Steve Angello and Matisse & Sadko

Size Records, Steve Angello’s record label, is approaching its ten-year anniversary and to commemorate the birthday of the label, Size recently announced SIZE100, with 'SLVR' (pronounced ‘silver’). Teaming up with Russian duo Matisse & Sadko, this release should be another biggie for the label.

The track begins with a hypnotic, robotic loop which fuels the anticipation, building to a crescendo of synths, giving way to the main theme: an uplifting track in-line with Angello’s past work, but very much 2013. ‘SLVR’ received its world premier exclusively on Pete Tong’s BBC Radio 1 show on Friday July 12 and it’s already attained the top spot on the current DMC Buzz Chart.

Steve Angello’s touring schedule is still full on with festival appearances at Tomorrowland, Electric Daisy Carnival and Creamfields as well as club night headline slots. With releases by artists including Tommy Trash, AN21 & Max Vangeli, and now SIZE100, the label continues to go from strength to strength.

Tortured Soul

Tortured Soul | Can't Keep Rhythm From A Dancer

Dome Records recently revealed the new single from soulful house trio, Tortured Soul. ‘Can’t Keep Rhythm From A Dancer’ has a certain familiar feel to it, sporting all those Tortured Soul credentials and also featured on the package are some tasty mixes from San Fran’s Miguel Migs, who adds a deep, nu disco/boogie vibe to the song.

The Brooklyn-based band - lead singer, drummer and songwriter Christian Urich, keyboard player Ethan White and bassist Jordan Scannella - are gearing up for their third album, for release in the autumn. For over a decade now drummer/vocalist John-Christian Urich (Cooly’s Hot Box) bassist JKriv and keyboardist Ethan White (dunnEasy) have been playing their “retro disco meets soulful house” fusion on dance floors around the world.

They’ve played in many place, from top clubs such as Fabric, Cargo, and the Jazz Cafe in London to 15,000-plus crowds at the Montreal Jazz Festival, headlining Southport Weekender and have also appeared at the Big Chill festival. From their early singles such as ‘I Might Do Something Wrong’, ‘How’s Your Life’ and ’Fall In Love’ to their albums ‘Introducing’ and ‘Did You Miss Me’, Tortured Soul’s style combines elements of old soul and funk with a modern dancefloor sensibility. In 2010 JKriv departed the band to pursue his own musical adventures and was replaced by Jordan Scannella on bass. Since then the guys have been busy working on some new material, including the single ‘Dirty’. There is a new album of reworkings of Tortured Soul past classics in the pipeline, titled ‘Undercover Soul’, including several new songs. It’s out July 15.

Dennis Ferrer Feat Janelle Kroll

Dennis Ferrer Feat Janelle Kroll | Mind Ur Step

Dennis Ferrer gets set to drop a deep vocal house monster on London’s Defected Records. Out July 22, it’s the latest in an impressive run of releases and this new one, ‘Mind Ur Step’, sees the very cool DJ/producer team up with Chicago’s Janelle Kroll for what surely will be one of the tracks of the summer.

The production on the record is as impressive as you would expect from Ferrer as a fiercely modulated bass throbs and leads the way while twisted percussion and neon synths flick playfully in and out of the mix, leaving Janelle to deliver the emotional punch with her powerful vocal. Highly original, this is another different style of track from Ferrer, who flirts between stunning vocal, deep house tracks and great instrumentals with ease. Top tune, check it out below.

Paul van Dyk & Arnej

Paul van Dyk & Arnej

This coming July 6, on his home turf of Berlin and in the Renaissance confines of the Zitadelle Spandau, Paul van Dyk will helm the second We Are One event. As We Are One puts in place its final preparations, PvD has gone studio-side with Canadian tech-house/trance producer Arnej to attempt to crown the night with an anthem of large proportions!

From its pianoforte overture, coupled with a calling Eastern tinged vocal-harmonic, Arnej drops the track down into one of his hard-rocking, electro/tech grooves, propelling the build with a substantial dose of dark, distorted sonic matter.
At the end of the break, the track intensely pitch-bends its way to the upwards, where PvD unchains the synths to hit home, creating a huge updraft of floor energy.
Have a listen to it below.

Spiritchaser – Yesterday’s Gone (Guess Records)

Spiritchaser - Yesterday's Gone

Tune of the Day – 4 April. We’re big fans of Richard Earnshaw here and really do enjoy the tracks he releases with production partner Mark Bamford, under their Spiritchaser guise. Again, this is another beautiful record and Emily Haughton’s vocals are sounding better and better with each release. ‘These Tears’ was absolutely massive and this track, coming in six mixes including a dub and radio edit, is just as lovely. This is the second track from their forthcoming album, following last year’s, ‘So Clear’, we would expect. More quality production, great music. Listen below.

Dennis Ferrer Feat K.T. Brooks – How Do I Let Go (DJ Slider Remix) (Street King)

Tune of the Day – 30 March. This is actually taken from the latest sampler of the forthcoming ‘After Hours: Miami 2012’, which is due for release on 23rd April. Following on from the label’s pre-Miami taster of four tracks, this three-track sampler contains a nice soulful vocal offering from Chocolate Avenue, called ‘Hot & Salted’, and a deeper, techier offering from Chris B, called ‘Riddle Me This’. But, it’s the Dennis Ferrer production of ‘How Do I Let Go’ that we’re paying special attention to as, in our opinion, it’s one of Dennis’ finest moments. The song and its meaning is just beautiful and holds so many good memories, from a time when quality house music productions still shone through and hadn’t been butchered by urban electro mash-ups. This track is also very special too because its stunning vocalist, K.T. Brooks, is no longer with us, having sadly passed away in 2008, but leaving a fine legacy of music behind to be remembered by. The track has been remixed for 2012 by DJ Slider, who makes it more uptempo and dancefloor friendly, whilst still including Brooks’ full vocal. The end result is a fantastic tribute to a great track. Rest In Peace K.T. you may be gone, but your fantastic voice lives on.

Colorless – Tiny Piano (Phonetic Recordings)

Colorless – Tiny Piano (Phonetic Recordings)

Tune of the Day – 27 March. Bit of a big one this one. It’s being doing the rounds since the last quarter of 2011, with label owner Rob Roar teasing people about release dates, but holding it back and allowing the hype to build. As Miami approached, the hype went into overdrive with the track charting high in many music sites and magazines. Now, with its recent limited release this month, it should hopefully do well. The track consists of a haunting piano, which grooves along, before dropping into those melodic piano keys and then the beat kicks back in again. As you begin to suspect that this is all that’s going to happen, things just start to speed up and the track turns into a massive, bouncing electro track that has been causing serious damage in many clubs around the world. Have a listen below.

Shawnee Taylor Feat. SYMPHO NYMPHO – Colors (Subliminal)

Shawnee Taylor Feat. SYMPHO NYMPHO – Colors (Subliminal)

Tune of the Day – 23 March. We couldn’t have a week of Miami bombs without having a track from New Jersey’s finest, the mighty Subliminal Records. This will be our last one until Monday and what a tune it is for the weekend! Easily one of our favourite vocalists, Shawnee Taylor is back with her own track, featuring the awesome SYMPHO NYMPHO, the production name of house legends Erick Morillo, Harry Romero and Jose Nunez. This is a great uplifting track that evokes visions of smiling faces, the hairs on your neck standing and everyone around you smiling, cheering and singing the vocal – pretty much the utopian scene that separates dance music from all other genres. Stunning vocals and keys tease you as you wait for the beat, then the 4/4 kicks in and the vocal really starts to belt out, sweeping you up on its musical journey. Absolutely love it! Check it out below.

Mark Knight - Bullets Vol 2 (Toolroom Records)

Mark Knight - Bullets Vol 2

Tune of the Day – 22 March. Years ago, when funky house was the dominant sound, beats started to get tougher and the only way we could think of describing the sound was the ‘Mark Knight’ sound, his productions were that good. They were darker than the funkier sound that was becoming so commercialised and within a couple of years, his sound and similar tracks from other producers taking influence from it, started to dominate Ibiza – think peak time Bora Bora and the Space Terrace. Now, in 2012, he continues to lead the way by making tracks that keep the crowd happy with catchy hooks and builds, and keep the DJs happy by producing credible dance floor bombs, as opposed to bastardised urban mash ups. This new release is the official follow up to the ‘Bullets EP’, which produced the two massive anthems ‘Devil Walking’ and ‘Sax’. Two tracks again; ‘Alright’, a great grooving track that has a distinct ‘90s flavour to it and our favourite, the more driving, ‘Together’. As we write this, we’re pretty certain that both of these tracks will be going off somewhere on South Beach just now, they’re both that good and have that Mark Knight quality assurance about them. ‘Together’ will be huge, it builds and builds, full of energy and really kicks off when a siren noise starts to dominate the track, complimenting its ongoing spoken word vocal. The best parties always happen at Knight, so make sure and listen on the link below.

Emeli Sandé ‘Our Version Of Events’ (Virgin)

Emeli Sandé

Tune of the Day – 17 February. Released on Monday, we were keeping this album until today, so we could keep it as Tune of the Day for the whole weekend… confusing I know, but we know what we mean! Hailing from Aberdeen, Emeli Sandé could well be the most exciting musical talent to emerge from the UK in years and with a debut album as powerful as this one, we can’t wait to see how much she matures as a singer and performer in the years to come. There’s only one word we can use to describe this album – perfect! Yes, we’re being pretty gushy here, but honestly when you listen to something this good, you can’t help but be excited.

Emeli Sandé
Emeli Sandé

All the tracks have been written by Emile and produced by her creative partner Shahid ‘Naughty Boy’ Khan and with 14 tracks on the album, it nearly hits 50 minutes in length – great for a debut and one that doesn’t short-change you with the usual 30 plus minutes nonsense. The track that kicked it all off for her, the D&B styled ‘Heaven’, starts the album, and as you would expect, latest and third single ‘Next To Me’ is included too. What you get with the other 12 tracks is laidback, soulful and powerful storytelling from a voice that sends shivers up your spine. This is not an album to dance to, although quite a few of her tracks already have dance mixes, this is an album to blast out in your car, at home chilling out, or whenever you get the chance to on your suitably branded MP3 player. With another tour kicking off in April, if it’s not already sold out, buy this album and book your tickets, you will not be disappointed. Click the link for more info Emeli and check her latest track on YouTube below:

With a pretty cool cover design it’s hard not to strain the eyes to see if you can find yourself on it anywhere. No such luck! Being a huge Oakenfold fan recently I have been impressed with his step back in the Goa psy-trance and the re-launch of his Perfecto Fluro podcast has gained real momentum that’s well deserved. Keeping himself as a cut above, the rest the album opens with a slightly Balearic, melodic tune called ‘Ocean Sparkles’. Instantly this album has made me want to book a holiday back to Goa in order to listen to this on the beach with the sea lapping at my toes.

From nowhere we get a twisted, progressive driver of a mix called ‘Close To You’ by Richard Beynon. With some funked up male vocals this is reminiscent of his Vegas residency tracks, this would guarantee some hands in the air action when dropped in a club. Next up we get a nice collaboration with the king of goth trance himself, Mr Robert Vadney, slipped in for good measure, this album really does have all you need.

One of my favouriute tracks has to be ‘Maybe It’s Over’ by Oakenfold himself. With a real ‘90s sounding, fantastically deep gravelly vocal from Tamara, this is digging up the past in a dammed amazing way! I hope we hear more from this voice in future collaborations. You may have already heard the recent Zen Freeman & Remy Le Duc remix of ‘Finally’ by Ce Ce Peniston Feat The Joyriders and any self-respecting party starter/DJ should be playing this right about… now. A timeless track and a very worthy mention is the collaboration between Oakenfold and Marco V, delivered as ‘Groove Machine’, so unique and with a great sounding riff I’ve set it as my ringtone! Gives me all the more reason to ignore my phone!

The feel of the CD 1 is very much Oakey’s storytelling through tunes, taking you on a fast journey of heartbreaks, ‘90s diva’s and thoughtful sounds. It ends with a chunky funky version of PPK’s ‘Resurrection’. It’s everything you want in an opening CD and more.

Now this is where we start to get REALLY interesting. Moving into a super deep underground sound we get hit with some serious groundbreaking tracks. Ode De Sol ‘Perfect Stranger’ is indeed no stranger to a captivating heavy sound that makes you want to paint your face fluro and dance in the waves at some random beach party in a distant land far away. Yup! I got all that from one track on CD2! Before I can even finish typing those words my ears are blessed with a familiar sound, what could possible be better than the track before last? Well, four words, one legend. Man with no name. His track ‘Sugarrush’ is wafted in on memories I thought were long forgotten! I thought this era was lost forever, where music was about the rush, the hairs standing up on the backs of your arms and the whole night was spent telling a complete stranger next to you your life story… and them telling you theirs. Wow. Well done Oakey.

Take note of the beautiful haunting voice of Matt Goss in ‘Firefly’, add an equally chilling rendition of Grace’s ‘Not Over Yet’, kissed by a remix of my all-time favourite perfecto track ‘Southern Sun’, with a pinch of Infected Mushroom - all make towards a truly ground breaking album.

Two very different CDs married up into one snug album, ready to take you on a rather fabulous journey. Without hesitation I know my favourite track on the album has to be ‘Full Moon Party’ by Paul himself. I’m not that long back from Goa and this track pretty much sums up the island in one go. A hedonistic adventure for those who think a little outside the box, much like Paul Oakenfold himself. Go buy! You won’t regret it!
